North West Cancer Research Appoints New Chief Executive

North West Cancer Research has appointed Alastair Richards as its new Chief Executive. 

 Alastair will take up the permanent role with immediate effect and will support the development and delivery of the charity’s strategic objectives. He will manage and develop the charity's fundraising and investment in cancer research based in the North West and North Wales.

Alastair joins the charity after spending more than 16 years working within the not-for-profit sector. He has held various finance-based and change management roles at organisations which include:

  •  The Abbeyfield Medway, 
  • Valley Society, 
  • Self Unlimited and 
  • Vitalise.

Most recently he was director of resources at Future Directions- a high quality social care provider based in Oldham. 

Alastair joins North West Cancer Research as it announced a record-breaking year of fundraising. The charity has secured £1.5million worth of charitable income, as well as committing new funding of £2.2million worth of cancer research over the next three years.  

He said: “With the number of people being diagnosed with cancer in the North West continuing to rise, we have a huge challenge ahead. But I believe that by funding the highest quality of medical research in the region, North West Cancer Research is well placed to deliver the funds and support needed to tackle this challenge."

“The charity benefits from a unique network of fundraisers, researchers, trustees and advisors who work in collaboration to ensure it is at the forefront of driving change and delivering the biggest impact on local cancer issues.”

The charity has committed to funding more than £13million worth of cancer research over the next five years at the University of Liverpool, Bangor University and Lancaster University. This life-saving research will improve understanding of how better to detect, treat and prevent cancer. This research will directly benefit people living in the North West.
