More than 120 people from Neston came together last week for a charity Butterfly Afternoon Tea to raise money for life-saving cancer research.

Organised by the Neston fundraising committee of North West Cancer Research the event held at the Neston Cricket Club raised £1,138 for the charity.

Tickets cost £12 and included a selection of handmade sandwiches, cakes and scones provided by Eaton Bakery. Refreshments also included special butterfly topped cupcakes in honour of North West Cancer Research’s Holly Blue butterfly logo.

Entertainment was provided by the talented Sarah Chidlow, soloist with the Birkenhead Operatic Society Trust, Tony Davies on keyboard and comedian “Budge Grownsell”

Additional funds were raised through a bumper raffle and the total amount will be donated to North West Cancer Research to support life-saving cancer research projects across the north west.

Pat Mann, Secretary of the Neston-based fundraising committee said: “The Butterfly Afternoon Tea was a great success and we beat last year’s total by at least one hundred pounds, so we are delighted. Everyone enjoyed themselves, the food, the entertainment and just the general relaxed and cheerful atmosphere.

“On behalf of everyone on the committee I would like to thank Neston Cricket Club for allowing us to host the event, our fabulous entertainers and Eaton Bakery for providing the food, which was delicious.

“Most importantly I’d like to thank all our supporters and everyone who came along and gave so generously to help us support North West Cancer Research. Cancer affects so many of us and it is only through research that we will be able to find new ways to treat it – which is why every penny we can raise is so important.”

North West Cancer Research has committed to funding more than £13million worth of research over the next five years.

Alastair Richards, CEO North West Cancer Research, said: “It was an honour to be invited to this year’s Butterfly Afternoon Tea in Parkgate. It was a great afternoon and wonderful to see so many people from the local community coming together and supporting the work we do.

“As a charity we rely heavily on the support of our fundraisers who work tirelessly to enable us to continue to support the very best medical research here in the north west.”

The next fundraising event from the Neston-based committee will be a Coffee Morning with arts and craft stalls, as well as a raffle and tombola on 21 June from 10am – midday at the Neston Cricket Club, Parkgate.  Entry is £3 on the door everyone will be made welcome.
