A group of Wirral fundraisers took a look behind the scenes of a purpose built cancer research lab, following a significant donation to North West Cancer Research.

The volunteers who organise annual festive fundraiser, the Wirral Bazaar, have raised more than £290,000 over the past 26 years. This significant donation has gone to support North West Cancer Research funded projects based in the North West of England and North Wales. 2016’s Wirral bazaar raised a record-breaking £34,000 over two days, attracting more than 2,800 visitors to its Thornton Manor venue.

The charity invited the Wirral-based fundraisers to see first-hand the incredible cancer research carried out at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. During the lab tour organisers of the Wirral Bazaar witnessed a new research project currently underway with scientists from the University of Liverpool, which uses the UK’s first and only proton beam located at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. The beam, which is currently used to treat patients with eye cancer, is also being used in research to determine if proton beam radiation could be effective in the future treatment of head and neck cancer.

North West Cancer Research Funding

North West Cancer Research is providing £187,000 for this three-year project, which has recently been boosted by a £20,000 grant from Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. North West Cancer Research has committeed to funding over £11 million worth of life-saving cancer research over the next five years. The charities aim is to fight the most prevalent cancers in our footprint, for a healthier future for the people of the North West and North Wales.
